MonarchTeach Prospective Students:Freshman Students

The MonarchTeach program is for Mathematics, Science, and Technology majors who want the opportunity to try out teaching as a profession. All MonarchTeach students earn degrees in their content area so students who wish to enroll in MonarchTeach courses must first discuss their curriculum plan with their assigned academic advisor. The following departments have undergraduate curriculum tracks designed for students to earn their degree and also obtain a license to teach in Virginia: Biological Sciences; Chemistry and Biochemistry; Mathematics and Statistics; Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Physics; STEM Education and Professional Studies.

Students begin the MonarchTeach program by taking Step 1: SEPS 195 - Inquiry Approaches to Teaching. This one-credit course allows math, science, and technology majors to explore teaching as a career. Students will gain teaching experience first-hand as they prepare and teach lessons in a local elementary school classroom. The course meets weekly on the ODU campus and prepares students for field experiences in nearby elementary schools. Experienced master teachers help students prepare lessons using an inquiry-based method. Each time students teach a lesson, both the master teacher and the mentor (classroom) teacher will be present to provide support and feedback. After completion of Step 1, students take Step 2 (STEM 195), a one-credit course where students prepare and teach lessons in middle school classrooms.

Following completion of Step 1 and Step 2, students enter into the MonarchTeach program and become eligible for scholarships, internships, and other assistance available only to MonarchTeach students. Students who enter ODU as freshmen in Fall 2013 will be able to begin the program in any subsequent semester and still complete their degree in four years if they start by the beginning of their third year.

Even if you decide not to go further with MonarchTeach courses, you will receive an automatic tuition reimbursement after successfully completing Step 1, and later, Step 2.
