- Old Dominion University’s Career Management Center is excited to present the “Last Lecture.” After receiving numerous faculty nominations, Dr. Simon Serfaty has been selected as the 2014 recipient. Dr. Serfaty is a Senior Professor of U.S. Foreign Policy at Old Dominion University. He is the Zbigniew Brzezinski Chair (emeritus) at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS), a leading think tank in Washington, D.C. His other teaching appointments have included UCLA (1968-72) and SAIS (1972-1993) where he served as director of the Johns Hopkins Center in Bologna, Italy (1972-76) and Executive Director of the Johns Hopkins Foreign Policy Institute (1985-92), UVA, the University of Paris (Paris-XI), and the College of Europe in Bruges. The author of a large number of books and monograph, and the editor of many anthologies, Dr. Serfaty’s most recent books include A World Recast: An American Moment in a Post-Western World (2013), Architects of Delusion: Europe, America and the Iraq War (2007), and The Vital Partnership (2005). He is also the author, most recently, of Un monde nouveau en manque d’Amérique (Paris, March 2014). He has published over 100 essays and articles in most leading journals on both sides of the Atlantic, and serves on the editorial boards of many more. A guest speaker in over 40 different countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia, Dr. Serfaty has been a frequent contributor to television and radio programs around the world. Dr. Serfaty has been an expert witness for the U.S. Congress, occasional consultant to the U.S. government and witness for other national legislatures in Europe. In 2008 he was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur (Knight of the French Legion of Honor) by President Sarkozy. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University and in 2001, Old Dominion designated him as the Eminent Scholar of the university.
