direct the Norfolk Chamber Consort as it concludes its 45th anniversary season with an evening of highlights on Monday, April 21 @ 7:30 PM at the Chandler Recital Hall. Every
selection represents a trait typical for the Consort. Its tireless research towards captivating and exciting programming is represented by the opening selections of Preludes and Fugues by J.S. Bach for harpsichord coupled with Mozart's renditions of the same works for string trio. Harpsichordist and NCC's former Artistic Advisor Allen Shaffer is joined by violinist Pavel Ilyashov, violist Satoko Rickenbaker and cellist Jeffrey Phelps for this performance. The blockbuster Brahms G Minor Piano Quartet, in which the aforementioned string trio performs with pianist and NCC's Artistic Co-Director Andrey Kasparov, speaks to the artistic heights that can be achieved using the area's abundant and first-rate local performing talent.

After the intermission, Britten's "Abraham and Isaac" will be performed by the guest contratenor Chris Dudley, currently with the Washington National Cathedral, and ODU faculty Brian Nedvin. Martinu's "Promenades" will follow, with Bonnie Kim on flute, Pavel Ilyashov on violin and the Consort Artistic Co-Director Oksana Lutsyshyn on harpsichord. Both works exemplify NCC's particular attention to works of the Modern Era and the organization's continuing aspiration to bring lesser known works by great composers to the attention of concert goers.

Concluding the program will be the world premiere of the piano-duo arrangement by Kasparov of Liszt's famous "Totentanz"--originally composed for piano and orchestra--that demonstrates the Consort's efforts to give well-known works a different angle through new mediums. Performing the work will be the Invencia PIano Duo who recently won in the Best Classical Category of the 2014 Veer Magazine Local Artists Awards.

A pre-concert discussion by Allen Shaffer will commence at 7:15 PM. After the concert, everybody in attendance is invited to a free gala reception organized by the NCC board as a gesture of appreciation for the Consort's patrons.

Individual tickets $22; Student tickets $9
