Upcoming Virtual Science Pub Will Explore What a Resilient Hampton Roads Looks Like in 2050

By Dan Campbell

Weather events this summer have reminded us of the power of Mother Nature with flooding, fires and storms across the United States. Resilience when facing these challenges is a recurring theme for residents of Hampton Roads.

Old Dominion University's next Science Pub will explore this issue. "What Does a Resilient Hampton Roads Look Like in 2050?" is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 23. It will be conducted using the Zoom platform. Folks are asked to register by Sept. 22, and they will be emailed a Zoom link.

Jessica C. Whitehead, Joan P. Brock Endowed Executive Director of the Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience (ICAR), will discuss how resilience goes beyond just projects protecting against flooding.

She will encourage attendees to think about how we use science to envision resilience across social, economic and environmental systems over the next three decades.

"The science of coastal resilience - sea level rise, storms, rainfall - gets more refined this year," Whitehead said. "But how often do we stop and think about what it means for how differently the region will look 29 short years from now? Join me in this conversation about how we start planning today to make sure everyone has access to make resilient choices tomorrow."

Science Pubs ODU is an opportunity for the community to engage with ODU researchers in an informal setting. Join us for a lively and engaging discussion; a curious mind is all that's needed.
