Fees

Minimal fees are charged to cover the expense of supplies used during care. Fees are to be paid at the first appointment. We accept personal checks, cash and credit cards for services.

Note: No further charge is made for second or subsequent appointments to complete treatment. If 5 months has elapsed since the beginning of treatment, a new fee will be charged and the appointment will be treated as a re-care.

Dental Hygiene Services Include:

  • Medical history and blood pressure
  • Oral cancer examination, dental and periodontal charting, peridontal assessment
  • Oral Health Education
  • Scaling, root Debridement and Polishing
  • Up to 4 radiographs (if indicated)
  • Additional diagnostic procedures (if indicated)
  • Other preventive services including: prostheic cleaning
  • Nurtitional counseling

NOTE: Senior citizens (62 years & older) and full-time ODU faculty, staff and students will receive a $5.00 discount for prophylaxis services only.

Fees must be collected at the initial treatment appointment. Clients will be dismissed if fee is not paid.

WELCOME to the Dental Hygiene Program at Old Dominion University! Thank you for your interest in being a patient in our program.

Our goals are to teach dental hygiene students, to provide quality preventive care for our patients, and to research health care issues that will keep our profession in the forefront of scientific knowledge.

It is important for you to understand that your care will be provided by dental hygiene students who are directly supervised by licensed dental hygiene faculty. The students' grades depend on your full cooperation.

All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult who is available for the entire appointment in the waiting area.

INFECTION CONTROL

To promote asepsis and to protect patients, dental hygiene students and faculty follow the current CDC Guidelines for Infection Control for Dental Health Care Settings.

SERVICES DISCLAIMER

  1. The Dental Hygiene Clinic DOES NOT provide a dental exam or diagnosis of restorative needs. Services such as fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, partials, or dentures are NOT provided in the Dental Hygiene Clinic. A dentist must provide these services.
  2. If a patient has medical or dental conditions that warrant further consultation with their physician/dentist, treatment in the Dental Hygiene Clinic will be delayed until written approval is obtained from the patient's physician/dentist. Examples of such conditions include: damaged or abnormal heart valves, specific heart conditions, organ replacements, joint replacements, uncontrolled diabetes, kidney dialysis, decreased immune system, elevated blood pressure (160/100), active infections of hepatitis or tuberculosis, active herpes infection (cold sores).
  3. Multiple appointments (2-4) and extended appointment lengths (3hours) are required for most clients.

SERVICES PROVIDED

The following services are offered in the Dental Hygiene Clinic based on the student/faculty assessment of your dental health needs:

  1. Health Questionnaire (including blood pressure screening)
  2. Radiographs (dental x-rays)
  3. Extraoral & Intraoral Exam (including oral cancer screening)
  4. Dental & Periodontal Assessment (teeth chart and measure of bone/gum health)
  5. Oral hygiene assessment and individualize patient education
  6. Oral prophylaxis (dental cleaning; healthy mouth)
  7. Non-surgical periodontal therapy (deep dental cleaning; gum problems)
  8. Fluoride treatment
  9. Dental sealants
  10. Nutrition counseling
  11. Tobacco cessation counseling and referral
  12. Athletic mouth protectors
  13. Supplemental therapy within the scope of dental hygiene practice in VA

PATIENT BILL OF RIGHTS

Patients in the Dental Hygiene Clinic at Old Dominion University have the right, consistent with the law, to:

  1. Courteous, respectful, and confidential treatment
  2. Treatment that meets the standard of care in the profession including the use of appropriate infection control
  3. Inspect their patient record and any radiographs taken
  4. Advanced knowledge of fees and services
  5. Explanation of recommended treatment, alternate treatment options, and explanation of risks with no treatment
  6. Participate in the planning of treatment (informed consent)
  7. Refuse recommended treatment (informed refusal)
  8. Continuity of care or referral for continued care
  9. Written informed consent prior to participating in experimental research and the right to refuse participation
  10. Provide feedback, comments, or complaints about treatment using the confidential Patient Satisfaction Survey

PAYMENT FOR SERVICES

  1. Payments are due on the day that treatment is completed. Cash, personal check, and credit card payments are accepted. No insurance or other third party payment methods are accepted.
  2. Fees are assessed using the most current Dental Hygiene Clinic Fee Schedule. Fees will be reviewed with patients prior to treatment.
  3. Patient services must be completed within 5 months of the initial treatment date or a new fee will be assessed and treatment will start over with the initial assessment.

Dismissal Policies

Patients may be dismissed/inactivated from the Dental Hygiene Clinic if:

  1. Two (2) appointments are cancelled for any reason.
  2. Two (2) appointments are missed without notification.
  3. Since our ultimate goal is to educate students with acceptable teaching patients if faculty deem that a patient is not suitable for our teaching clinic, or if a patient fails to comply with policies, the patient will be dismissed, inactivated, and referred to the private sector.

All broken appointments are documented in the patient's health record by the dental hygiene student and approved by supervising faculty.

We are unable to provide babysitting services at the school; therefore it is necessary to have someone care for your child while you are being treated.

The dental hygiene program at Old Dominion University provides comprehensive dental hygiene care at its on-campus health care facility from September through June. These services are available to OldDominion University students, faculty, and staff and to the local community.

The goal of the Staff at the Dental Hygiene Care Facility is to assist individuals in eliminating and preventing oral disease and in maintaining optimal health. The facility is staffed and supervised by licensed dental hygienists and dentists. Dental hygiene students, who provide the oral health care, have extensive education and training and have demonstrated competence in the clinical services before treating the public.

The dental hygiene students offer a variety of oral health services under faculty supervision to patients from the university and the community (adults and children). All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. No children under age 5 are seen in our facility.

Patient Responsibilities

The dental hygiene students have established schedules for patient care. Since the goal is quality dental hygiene care within a teaching/learning environment, patient cooperation is essential. Patients should understand that this is an educational setting and that the student's learning experience and progress depends on the patient's full cooperation. Everyone's time is valuable. If for some reason a patient is unable to keep an appointment, advance notice of 24 hours is required to allow the student to arrange to treat other patients. Patients with more than two cancellations will be inactivated from the care facility. We look forward to working with you.

Appointments and Scheduling

Treatment at the Dental Hygiene Care Facility proceeds more slowly than in private dental practice because patient care is provided by students and thoroughly monitored by the faculty. Preventive treatment appointments are usually one and a half hours to three hours in length, and many patients need more than one visit for the completion of services. The clinical staff realize that the patient's time is valuable and strive to keep to a minimum the number of appointments a patient must have. If multiple appointments are necessary to complete treatment, no additional fee is charged to the patient.

The Dental Hygiene Care Facility is opened weekly from September through June with the exception of holidays Thanksgiving, Semester Breaks, Spring and Summer vacation. Clinic business hours vary from semester to semester according to program schedules; however, appointments are available during the morning, afternoon and evening hours. The Dental Hygiene Care Facility is located on the first floor of the Health Sciences Building at the corner of Hampton Blvd. and 46th Street, next to the Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.
