  • Prior to joining the faculty at Old Dominion University, Dr. Dunkerly-Bean was a literacy specialist, award-winning classroom teacher and faculty member at the University of Nevada Las Vegas where she earned her doctorate. Her research focuses on the intersection of human rights, social justice and critical literacy through a cosmopolitan framework. Her work has been published in several journals including Current Issues in Comparative Education and Language and Literacy, as well as featured in several edited volumes. Along with Co-author Dr. Thomas Bean, Dr. Dunkerly-Bean recently published a methods text, Teaching Young Adult Literature: Developing Students as World Citizens. She served as the associate editor for the International Reading Association’s Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and serves on the publications committee for the Literacy Research Association.
