Descriptions of Available Tools

Blackboard

Blackboard is a course management system that incorporates Web pages, email, discussion boards, chat rooms, online quizzes, an online grade book, a calendar, virtual groups and document sharing. This online learning environment is easy for faculty to use and can easily integrate course materials in a variety of formats: PowerPoint presentations, Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, video/audio clips. If you need assistance with Blackboard, please contact the Center for Learning Technologies (CLT) by email [clt@odu.edu].

FSCS

Faculty/Student Communication System: FSCS is a web-based application that manages communication between faculty and students. Designed to replace email as electronic communication, it gives faculty the flexibility to send messages with attached files to the entire class or an individual student. Teaching assistants can help faculty maintain messages easily since this application is separate from faculty email accounts. Students can view messages/announcements from the instructor and submit assignments online.

Course Groups

A course group contains only students registered in a specific course. Course Groups are used to restrict access to FSCS, and Lotus Notes web pages or can be used to email students registered in a specific course. Students must activate their university student email account to have access to the course tools. Note:Course groups are automatically created for FSCS and do not need to be specifically requested. Blackboard does not require course groups.
