A community exists on the basis of shared values and principles. At Old Dominion University, student members of the community are expected to uphold and abide by standards of conduct that form the basis of the Code of Student Conduct ("the Code"). These standards are embodied within a set of core values that include integrity, fairness, respect, community, and responsibility.When student members of the community fail to exemplify these values, student conduct proceedings are used to assert and uphold the Code.

All students are expected to assume responsibility for their conduct, and to assume reasonable responsibility for the behavior of others. The student conduct process exists to protect the interests of the community, and to educate and respond to those students whose behavior is not in accordance with our standards.

My student has a pending case. How can I help?

The Office of Student Conduct & Academic Integrity is willing to speak with you about our office and process to help you understand the student conduct system. Staff members are not permitted to discuss a student's conduct record or any specific incident or case without written permission from the student.

If your student would like us to speak with you about their case, please have them complete the Release of Information form.

Parents who wish to better understand the University's conduct process are strongly encouraged to read the Code of Student Conduct. Many answers to the most frequently asked questions are found within this document.

Why can’t you speak with me directly about my student’s case?

Student conduct records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 ("FERPA," for short). Students wishing to grant parents or others access to their conduct records must sign a Release of Information (PDF) so OSCAI can discuss the student's case with the person(s) named in the release.

Can I attend scheduled conduct conferences, hearings, or meetings with my student?

Please note that student conduct proceedings are closed. Therefore, parents are not able to attend or participate unless they are serving in the capacity of the student's advisor.

I received a letter from your office stating my student was found in violation of the university's alcohol or drug policy. What should I do next?

FERPA permits University officials to disclose limited information from a student's education records without the student's prior written consent. One example occurs when a student is found in violation of the University's alcohol or other drug policies and the student is under 21 years of age at the time of the disclosure. In such cases, parents or guardians will be notified in writing after the final outcome of the case. Please note: there may be a month or more delay between the student's incident date and the date on which parents or guardians are notified. This delay is due to the time needed to resolve the student's case. Parents are not generally notified of an alcohol or other drug incident at the time of the incident.

Parents or guardians receiving written notice of their student's violation(s) are encouraged to speak directly with their student to learn more information about the student's involvement in the incident and/or to ask the student to sign a release with the Office of Student Conduct & Academic Integrity.
