Learning Communities:History & Social Justice

(linked to sections of HIST 104H, U.S. History)

This learning community focuses on issues of social justice relating to the issues of civil rights, school desegregation, and race relations in the United States with specific emphasis on the ways in which social rights, responsibilities, and aims are articulated andexperiences in the public realm.

  • Experience hands-on "laboratory" work in the archives. and conduct oral history interviews that will contribute to the Desegregation of Virginia Education (DOVE) project.
  • Take trips to DOVE collections in this area, such as those held at Norfolk State University.
  • Network/collaborate with community activists who continue to work in social justice organizations to make a difference in the local community.
