College of Health Sciences:Undergraduate Advising

Welcome from the College of Health Sciences Advising Center

Welcome to the College of Health Sciences! Our advisors are here to assist you in any way they can to ensure that your academic experience at Old Dominion University is a positive one. All Health Sciences programs require a secondary application for admission; admission to the University does not guarantee acceptance into Health Sciences programs. Until accepted into your intended major, you will work with a college advisor who will assist you with general education requirements, required prerequisite courses, and the application process for your major.

Advising

Each semester you will be required to meet with an advisor for a pre-registration appointment. In your advising appointment, we will discuss your major curriculum and academic goals, identify appropriate resources for any academic challenges you might be experiencing, and remove your advising hold. Advisors are assigned by last name:

A-F Katie Ferrara

G-O Keith Krepcho

P-Z Leanne White

Advising appointments for current Health Sciences students can be scheduled via MyAdvisor. When requesting an appointment, in the "reason for your visit" please identify the type of advising assistance needed. An advisor will confirm your appointment via email. If you are a new freshman or transfer student, you should register to attend Preview where you will meet with an advisor and register for classes. Transfer students with 24+ credit hours may contact their advisor via email to request an appointment. Always provide your name and UIN when contacting your advisor.

The Advising Center is located in room 2112 of the Health Sciences Building between 46th and 47th streets. Be sure to come to your advising appointment prepared by completing a plan of classes in Degreeworks ahead of time. Please arrive promptly; students who arrive more than 5 minutes late to an advising appointment will be asked to reschedule.

General questions can be answered via email at hsadvising@odu.edu or by calling 757-683-5137. We also encourage students to find us on Facebook or Twitter, and check out our The Script blog.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

About Advising

You must meet with an advisor every semester. We start advising around October 1st in the fall and February 1st in the spring. Our office serves approx. 1200 students, so we recommend that you make an advising appointment early in the semester to avoid delays in registration. You will schedule your advising appointment through MyAdvisor. You can access MyAdvisor through the MyODU portal.

Advising appointments are scheduled on the hour and half hour in 30 minute increments. After you submit an appointment request, you will receive confirmation via email. Your appointment is not confirmed until you receive this email, so please submit your appointment request at least 24 hours in advance of the request appointment time and check your email regularly.

You should always come prepared for your advising appointment - this means knowing which classes you plan to take the following semester BEFORE you meet with your advisor, who will help you adjust your plan as needed. The best way to prepare for your advising appointment is to create a plan of classes in DegreeWorks before you meet with your advisor. Don't forget to save the plan!

Your Advisor Will...

- create an open, respectful and supportive environment
- provide thorough information about University and College of Health Sciences policies and procedures
- provide you with information about resources on campus
- provide program application assistance
- maintain your confidentiality and listen carefully to your questions as well as career and academic goals

As a Student You Should...

- be engaged in the advising process, by reading your email regularly and meeting with your advisor in a timely manner to avoid delays in registration.
- prepare for your advising appointment by gathering the information needed to understand program requirements, course options and prerequisite requirements before meeting with your advisor.
- utilize DegreeWorks and other University provided technologies to create a degree plan, in consultation with your advisor, that will successfully prepare you for application to your program.
- actively seek and participate in other educational and co-curricular opportunities that will help you achieve your academic and career goals.
- take responsibility for your academic success!
