Student Affairs Leadership Awards

Nominations will be accepted from March 1-31, 2011.

RSVP

The student representative and advisor who will be attending must RSVP. You will need to enter the name of your organization, the name of the student, and contact phone number and an email address.

At the end of the school year, the Division of Student Affairs recognizes outstanding leaders and organizations for their contributions to the ODU community. During the month of March, students, faculty and staff nominate outstanding leaders for recognition at the Awards ceremony held in April.

We are asking each organization to participate by selecting two representatives from your organization and an adviser to attend this ceremony.


Awards

Maggie Curry Williams Quiet Influence Award

The quiet influence award recognizes an individual student who has made a significant difference in an organization, even though the student has not held an executive office. This student serves as a role model and has exerted a positive influence on his/her peers. While involved on campus, it is vital that the student maintains academic focus; therefore, a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required.


Community Service of the Year Award: Individual

The Community Service of the Year Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a pattern of leadership through community service to Old Dominion. While involved on campus, it is vital that the student maintains academic focus; therefore, a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for an individual who receives this award.


Community Service Award of the Year: Organization

The Community Service of the Year Award is presented to an organization that has demonstrated a pattern of leadership through community service to Old Dominion University and the surrounding community.


Barbara Jordan Community Service Award

Barbara Jordan (1936-1996), an African American female, was elected to the United States Senate after serving in the Texas State Legislature. Ms. Jordan received her LL.B Degree from Boston University, and during her distinguished career was awarded over 27 honorary degrees. She was selected numerous times for the "One of the 25 Most Influential Women in America" by the World Almanac. The benchmark of Ms. Jordan's career occurred in 1976, when she gave the Keynote Address at the 1976 Democratic National Convention. Ms. Jordan paved the way for many African Americans to achieve success in various areas, including the political arena. It is in recognition of her contributions that we have created this award. The Barbara Jordan Community Service Award recognizes a student who has had a positive impact on the African American community through service.


Most Improved Organization Award

The Most Improved Organization Award recognizes one student organization or club that has developed greatly over the past year. This student organization or club has excelled through membership, recruitment, leadership development, participation in programming, and has made a consistent contribution to campus life.


New Organization of the Year Award

The New Organization of the Year Award recognizes one student organization or club formed over the past year. This organization has excelled as a new organization on our campus and brought something unique to the Old Dominion Campus.


Program of the Year Award

The Program Of The Year Award recognizes one student organization/club that developed and sponsored a program that has enriched academic, and/or the co-curricular lives of Old Dominion students.


Advisor of the Year

The Advisor of the Year Award recognizes one advisor who has provided a student organization with outstanding support and service during the academic year.


Leader of the Year

The Leader of the Year Award recognizes one graduate and one undergraduate student who has made a significant difference in an organization and the ODU community. This student serves as a role model and has exemplified positive leadership over his/her time at ODU. While involved on campus, it is vital that the student maintains academic focus; therefore, a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required.


Student Organization of the Year

The Student Organization of the Year Award recognizes one student organization or club that excelled through membership, recruitment, leadership development, or participation in programming, and has made a consistent contribution to campus life.


New Member of the Year

The New Member of the Year Award recognizes an individual student in his/her first year of involvement who has made a significant difference in an organization. This student serves as a role model and has exerted a positive influence on his/her peers. While involved on campus, it is vital that the student maintains academic focus; therefore, a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required.


Intercultural Initiative

The Intercultural Initiative Award is presented to organizations who joined together with 1 or more student organizations to create a program that raised the level of attendees' awareness and understanding of an aspect of culture.


Monarch Spirit of the Year Award

The Monarch Spirit of the Year Award recognizes one student who has made significant difference on ODU's Campus. This student serves as a role model and has exemplified being a true monarch. He/She is always willing to show Monarch Pride, is an ambassador for ODU, and represents ODU well. This student cannot be a freshman since this award recognizes multi-year of Monarch Spirit. While involved on campus, it is vital that the student maintains academic focus; therefore, a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required.


International Leadership Award

The International Leadership Award, newly established in Spring 2012, recognizes an outstanding student who has demonstrated commitment to promote internationalization on campus and exhibited significant contribution to enhance success and engagement of international students community at ODU through notable leadership and service.
