ODU Peninsula Higher Education Center to Host Technology Showcase and Open House Sept. 27

Multidisciplinary, 3-D technology, which can help teach, train and imagine the future, will be on display at the Technology Showcase and Open House on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Old Dominion University's Peninsula Higher Education Center.

ODU's Batten College of Engineering and Technology, College of Business and Public Administration, and Department of Computer Science are hosting the event at the center, which is located at 600 Butler Farm Road in Hampton.

The daylong event will feature displays by Microsoft, Anybots, EON Reality and ODU's Center for Advanced Engineering Environments (CAEE). Demonstrations will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed by an open house from 4-7 p.m.

Attendees can see how 3-D technology is changing how we learn, teach, train and do business, and also meet with college representatives and admissions counselors to discuss Old Dominion and the Peninsula Center as options for academic study.

Microsoft will have representatives on hand to demonstrate its advanced interfaces, including Microsoft Kinect for Windows and the company's brain-based interface (thought control of the computer).

Ahmed Noor, ODU professor of engineering and CAEE director, will lead demonstrations of the center's research into advanced learning environments and networks.

Since 2001, CAEE researchers have worked closely with researchers from NASA, other universities and major software vendors to incorporate new developments into commercial systems, making research advances available to industry in a timely manner.

The Peninsula Higher Education Center is a state-of-the-art academic facility aligned with ODU's mission to promote the advancement of knowledge. The Peninsula Center supports a wide array of graduate and undergraduate programs that meet the needs of the local community.

The center currently offers 24 undergraduate and 25 graduate programs with more than 200 classes scheduled each week. Education programs include teacher licensure, as well as advanced degrees in instruction and administration.

The center is also home to CAEE and the Virginia Space Grant Consortium.

For more information about the Technology Showcase and Open House, call the ODU Peninsula Center at 757-766-5200 or email phec@odu.edu. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested for groups of 15 or more.
