Ph.D. Graduate Carlos Teixeira Lauded by Council on Foreign Affairs

Foreign Affairs Magazine, in its latest edition, named Carlos Teixeira's book, "Brazil, the United States, and the South American Subsystem: Regional Politics and the Absent Empire," as one of 2012's "Best Books in International Relations."

The book is based on a dissertation Teixeira completed at Old Dominion University in 2011, said Regina Karp, director of ODU's international studies program. The dissertation, titled: "The Absent Empire: The United States and the South American Regional Subsystem," focused on Latin American politics and American foreign policy.

While at ODU, Teixeira taught Introduction to International Relations. He is now in a tenure-track faculty position at Pontifical University of Sao Paulo where he teaches courses in international relations.

In the magazine review, Teixeira is characterized as a "rising Brazilian scholar" who "forcefully makes the case that the United States has employed radically different policies in Mexico and the Caribbean basin than in more distant South America."

The review also notes Teixeira's "inspired insights" that "demand the revision of much conventional wisdom regarding inter-American relations."

Foreign Affairs Magazine is published by the Council on Foreign Relations, an independent, nonpartisan think tank whose membership includes former senator and current U.S. Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel, actress Angelina Jolie and journalists such as Brian Williams, Fareed Zakaria and Erin Burnett.
