Board of Visitors Appoints Students to SCHEV and SEES Leadership Council Boards
May 02, 2013
The Old Dominion University Board of Visitors appointed two students to boards of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and the Division of Student Engagement and Enrollment Services (SEES) Leadership Council at its meeting on Friday, April 26.
Taniesha "Tanny" Simmons, a political science and international studies major from Alexandria, Va., was appointed ODU's student representative to SCHEV. Megan Bean, a communication major from Virginia Beach, was named to the SEES Student Leadership Council.
Simmons has been director of legislative and diversity affairs with ODU's Student Government Association for the past school year. She helped facilitate the ODU Votes campaign during the 2012 presidential election and helped arrange ODU's General Assembly Day at the Capitol in Richmond this past winter.
A resident assistant with the Office of Housing and Residence Life since 2011, Simmons helps resident students with the transition from high school to university life through the presentation of programming events and initiatives.
Bean, whose volunteer experience in the community includes working at the USS Wisconsin and as a fundraiser for Blankets for the Homeless, has been an honor roll student since transferring to ODU from Tidewater Community College, where she earned an associate degree in 2011. Bean, who will graduate in 2014, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at the university.
SCHEV makes higher education public policy recommendations to the governor and General Assembly in such areas as capital and operating budget planning, enrollment projections, institutional technology needs and student financial aid.
The SEES Student Leadership Council provides advice and input to the Division of Student Engagement and Enrollment Services on matters relating to the quality of student life at ODU. Its members also may be asked to serve on university committees and assist with admission activities.
