Benefit Concert to Feature ‘Music Inspired by Women’

Rudolf Pelaez Golez, one of the Philippines' notable young pianists, will present a program titled "Music Inspired by Women" Tuesday, March 25, as part of Old Dominion's Women's History Month events.

The evening of music will feature the works of such composers as Bach, Beethoven and Chopin. Underlying the works performed are the" artistic inspiration and delicate influence of women." A piece by the 19th-century German musician and composer Clara Wieck-Schumann, who has been described as "one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era," will also be celebrated.

The benefit concert, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Center for the Performing Arts, will include a luminary to remember the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, on Nov. 8, 2013. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. in the President's Dining Room in Webb Center. Those wishing to attend the reception are asked to RSVP by March 17 to http://delivr.com/2qds4.

Golez studied at the Julliard School (pre-college) under Seymour Lipkin and made his orchestral debut with the Manila Chamber Orchestra playing Beethoven's 4th Concerto. He graduated with a master's degree in music from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, in 2002.

Golez was the sole prizewinner at the first ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition. He was featured soloist at the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Filipino Young Artists Series and won critical acclaim with performances with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, under composer/conductor Cirstobal Halffter of Madrid.

He represents the Philippines in concerts abroad and regularly performs in the United States with colleagues as a collaborative artist and soloist. He currently serves as dean of the College of Music of Liceo de Cagayan, Cagayan de Oro.

The March 25 concert is sponsored by the Women's Center, Filipino American Center and Department of Women's Studies. For more information call 683-5099.
