AWARDS
JENNIFER BAKER, adjunct assistant professor of theatre arts and costume shop manager, a 2013 Meritorious Achievement Award for Excellence in Design for costume design for "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."
GREG CUTTER, professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, a 2013 R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine for his work on an analysis instrument that can quickly and easily detect arsenic in food or water. The award is for the development by PID Analyzers, a private company, of the Model 33 Arsenic in Water & Food Analyzer. Cutter has served as a consultant to the Massachusetts company.
KATHERINE HAMMOND, director of the theatre program, a 2013 Meritorious Achievement Award for Excellence in Directing for "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."
BOOKS
PETER BERNATH, chair of the chemistry and biochemistry, editor of "The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) at 10: A Solar Occultation Anthology." Bernath also wrote portions of the book, a compilation of articles that originated from an international conference he organized and hosted at ODU last year.
LYTTON MUSSELMAN, Mary Payne Hogan Professor of Botany, co-editor of "Parasitic Orobanchaceae: Parasitic Mechanisms and Control Strategies" (Springer), a collection of research results and commentaries from 26 experts worldwide. Co-editor is Daniel Joel of the Newe-Ya'ar Research Center in Israel and Jonathan Gressel of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.
STEVE YETIV, Louis I. Jaffe Professor of Political Science and International Studies, "National Security through a Cockeyed Lens: How Cognitive Bias Impacts U.S. Foreign Policy" (Johns Hopkins University Press).
PAPERS/PRESENTATIONS
JOHN ADAM, University Professor of mathematics, "X and the City: 'Arithmetic' Applied to Urban Life," a public lecture at Hofstra University as part of its Science Evenings with IDEAS (Institute for the Development of Education in the Advanced Sciences). Also, "Mathematical Patterns in Nature," a keynote address at the Annual Conference of the Association for Constructivist Teaching, held at the National Museum of Mathematics, New York City.
BETTY ROSE FACER, senior lecturer and director of the Language Learning Center in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, "Promoting World Language Education: Advocacy from Community to Capitol Hill" at the Maryland Foreign Language Association 2013 Fall Conference, Anne Arundel Community College.
D.E. WITTKOWER, assistant professor of philosophy, "A Phenomenology of Sharing on Social Networking Sites" at IR14: 14th Annual Meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers, in Denver.
