Please join the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice and the Graduate Student Organization of Criminology and Sociology in attending a presentation by Dr. Michelle Brown titled "Mass Incarceration and Transformative Justice" on November 7th.Abstract: A politics of affect is central to efforts that try to change the way we view and feel about punishment. Using examples from over ten years of fieldwork in various kinds of penal settings, I explore the visceral and extreme quality of pain in prisons and how those pains are radically intensified among the most vulnerable under the current carceral regime. In doing so, this project takes seriously what it feels like to live under mass incarceration. As prisoners, activists, organizers, and scholars struggle to find innovative and effective ways in which to engage public discourse on punishment, emotions have played surprising and important roles in communicating the degree of dehumanization present in prisons AND in building alternative discourses to punishment. These efforts challenge our understandings of penal institutions, penal subjectivities, and their relationship to the state in a manner that may assist us in thinking creatively, imaginatively about how we frame questions of social justice against carceral regimes in a globalizing world.Refreshments Served at 5:45
