Housing and Residence Life

There are many people within Housing & Residence Life that help to complete your experience while living on campus. Residence Hall Directors (RHDs) are full-time staff members who manage the daily functions of an apartment or residence hall. Additionally, there are Assistant Hall Director(s) (AHDs) which are graduate or doctoral students, working part-time, to assist in the daily operations of the buildings.

The most commonly know positions are the Resident Assistants (RAs); they are what make living on campus an enjoyable experience. RAs assume an active leadership role through the development and preservation of a positive living and learning environment within the residential communities. It's a tough round the clock job ensuring that every student has a safe and comfortable place to grow academically as well as personally. Strategically placed in every community on campus, you are encouraged to befriend and interact with your Resident Assistants - after all they are fellow Monarchs and love ODU as much as you.

During the summer, University Conference Services - a unit of Housing & Residence Life, hires Summer RAs as well as SCA's, or Summer Conference Assistants. SCAs help to operate our buildings during the summer months for outside groups to visit the Hampton Roads area.

There are several other student positions within Housing & Residence Life that help to create a positive overall experience for every student living on campus. Our Desk Receptionist (DRs) and Night Desk Receptionist (NDRs) maintain the front desks of our buildings. These student leaders help with administrative tasks in each building along with helping to create a safe environment.

Lastly, the Housing & Residence Life office employs student Office Assistants (OA). Office Assistants help to file paperwork and answer the main Housing & Residence Life phones.


Now Accepting RA Applications for 2014-2015

Housing & Residence Life is now accepting applications for the RA Position for 2014-2015. Interested candidates must attend one informational session and submit an electronic application. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on January 31, 2014.

Resident Assistant Responsibilities

Academic Responsibilities

  • RAs must have completed at least 26 credit hours by the start of employment. Current freshmen may apply for positions as long as they have 26 credit hours by start of their employment.
    • Graduate students and incoming undergraduate transfer students are not eligible for the RA position.
  • RAs must maintain full-time status (12 credit hours) and maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • RAs must be in good conduct standing (not on conduct probation by the time of employment or while employed) and abide by State and Federal law, University policies, Housing & Residence Life policies and procedures, and the Student Code of Conduct while employed by Housing & Residence Life.
  • RAs are expected to limit extracurricular activities due to the time commitment and demands of the RA position.
  • RAs are not permitted to be student teaching, holding internship positions requiring more than 20 hours per week, or are serving as Student Government President, Editor of the Mace and Crown, Student Activities Council President, and/or a member of the Residence Hall Association Executive Board.
  • RAs are required to commit to a full academic year of employment-applicants intending to graduate or study abroad at the end of the fall semester will not be considered for a position.

Student Interaction & Community Development Responsibilities

  • Support Housing & Residence Life's mission, facilitate the growth and development of all residents, respect all residents, support and model appreciation of diversity, and maintain a healthy floor/hall community environment.
  • Promote and maintain an environment conducive to academic success for the residential community.
  • Plan and implement floor and hall activities, and additionally encourage residents to create and implement activities.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Serve on duty for after-hours assistance during assigned evening and weekend hours.
  • Work four to five non-paid hours at the front desk of their assigned residential community.
  • Provide duty and desk coverage during University closings and/or emergencies, including buildings open over break periods.

Team Member & Departmental Responsibilities

  • Applicants are required to commit to a full academic year of employment.
  • All applicants must apply for on-campus housing for 2014-2015; sign the Housing & Dining Agreement Terms and Conditions. Additionally at the time of application RAs will be required to pay the 250.00 housing application fee and deposit (note: If you are not hired/placed at the conclusion of the hiring process, a period of release will be provided to cancel your 2014-2015 Housing & Dining Agreement with no penalty.)
  • RAs must attend mandatory fall training in August 2014 and winter training in January 2015. Note: Training dates may be added or altered.

Remuneration

  • $7500 stipend per academic year and a residence hall room/apartment at the rate of $1000 per semester. RAs placed in buildings that remain open during break periods will receive additional compensation. Note: RAs are responsible for paying their own meal plan.
  • RAs that live in suites will have suitemates assigned during the HRL Return Housing Process. RAs assigned to spaces that are normal reserved for double occupancy will be assigned a roommate at the discretion of Housing & Residence Life.
  • International candidates must have all required paperwork (e.g. a work VISA) to obtain work approval through International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).
