Old Dominion University will continue an ongoing collaboration with Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters and Eastern Virginia Medical School next week with the fourth annual installment of a safety-oriented continuing education seminar geared toward caregivers.

The "Creating a Culture of Safety... Together 2014" seminar will be held March 27 at various locations on the ODU, CHKD and EVMS campuses, in Norfolk.

The event's featured speaker will be Dr. Marty B. Scott, vice president of Wake Forest Baptist Health's Brenner Children's Hospital. He also serves as the chief patient safety officer for Wake Forest Baptist Health.

At ODU, Dr. Scott will speak during a 2 p.m. presentation scheduled for the Ted Constant Convocation Center's Blue Room. He will discuss nursing's role in patient safety.

While the event is geared toward nursing students, Karen A. Karlowicz, associate professor and chair of ODU's School of Nursing, noted that the content is relevant to all College of Health Sciences students.

Dr. Scott is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care. He received a medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1982 and a master's in business from the University of North Carolina Charlotte in 2001. Dr. Scott completed a pediatric critical care fellowship at the University of Miami and is certified as a patient safety officer.
