These courses provide instruction to assist students in developing skills to become credentialed as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) through the Substance Abuse Certification Alliance of Virginia (SACAVA), which meets or exceeds accreditation standards of the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC).
These courses are designed for students with limited or no experience in substance abuse counseling or professionals who
wish to add the IC&RC certification to their professional licenses.
Students will learn the Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) practice domains required for the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium examination. The domains include: clinical evaluation, treatment planning, referral, service coordination, counseling, client family and community education, documentation, and professional and ethical responsibilities. This noncredit continuing education course prepares students through weekly training workshops that will provide a minimum of 270 education training hours required for all IC&RC examination candidates. This certificate course, as well as its instructors, have been vetted by Old Dominion University and the Substance Abuse Certification Alliance of Virginia to ensure that they meet the SACAVA/IC&RC certification requirements. Although this training is designed for students to complete all of the offered workshops, students may take a portion of these courses as professional development if they choose.
