TEACH Grant

Through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program that provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.

Critical Teaching Shortage Areas in Virginia Federal High-Need Teaching Fields

Students interested in accessing funds through the TEACH grant program at Old Dominion University must adhere to the following policy.

  • Be admitted into an approved teacher education program. The teacher education program must be in a critical shortage area identified either by federal regulation or the Virginia Department of Education in the academic year the student is admitted into the approved teacher education program.
  • Have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours towards the bachelor's degree program.
  • Complete the financial aid application through the FAFSA website http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
  • Request a TEACH grant financial aid memo from Teacher Education Services Office 683-5179.
  • Wait to receive notification for joint counseling on TEACH grant program regulations from the ODU financial aid office.
  • Attend joint counseling sessions with Financial Aid Advisor and Teacher Education Services Advisor upon receipt of award and annual there after. This is mandatory for disbursement of funds.
  • Be a U. S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.
