Questions about the New Website

General Content Questions

Who updates content?

That depends on the URL. If the URL begins with www.odu.edu or odu.edu (without anything in front of the "odu"), the content is maintained by web content maintainers within the responsible department(s) or University Web Communications. If the URL begins with ww2 or any of the college-specific subdomains (such as al.odu.edu), the content is maintained by the appropriate department.

How do I request content updates?

If you are not a member of the responsible department, you can request for content be evaluated for updating by emailing your request to webcomm@odu.edu.

I emailed webcomm@odu.edu but got a response from occshelp@odu.edu, what happened?

While University Web Communications is not a part of Information Technology Services (formerly OCCS), we are a member of the Footprints system for tracking technical support issues on campus. Emailing your requests to webcomm@odu.edu automatically creates a Footprints ticket. This ensures that your issue will be dealt with in a timely and efficient manner.

University Calendar

How do I add an event to the University Master Calendar?

You should contact your department's web content maintainer. The maintainers have access to post events to the master calendar.

How do I edit or delete an event on the University Master Calendar?

You should contact your department's web content maintainer. They have the access to edit or delete entries from your department's calendar, which populates the University Master Calendar.

Video & Interactivity

After I watch certain videos, why do I see links to other videos that have nothing to do with ODU?

The new website offers the ability to embed content from YouTube. This utilizes YouTube's native player, which will offer videos that YouTube considers to be of similar interest and/or content after a video has played. We have no control over what videos YouTube chooses to offer.

Can I have a scrolling photos box like the University homepage has on my page(s)?

The scrolling photos feature (called the "Hompage Interactive") is reserved for the homepage. The WCMS currently offers the ability to add video and slideshows to your pages. Additional interactive features are planned for future development.

Website Questions

What does ww2.odu.edu mean? What does blue.odu.edu mean?

"ww2" is the prefix for the legacy website, which is the term for the "old" website. All content on ww2 will eventually be migrated to the WCMS or deleted. "blue.odu.edu" is the applications environment, which hosts some advanced functionality and will continue to coexist with www.odu.edu.

How do I print the new website?

The new website presently uses a basic print stylesheet. A robust print stylesheet, which will allow you to print website pages in an attractive format is one of the development priorities for the University Web Team after the migration phase is completed.

Why a web content management system (WCMS)? What are the benefits?

Content management helps promote the cross-use and re-use of content throughout the site, prevents duplication of content, allows the editing of content in one place and helps with oversight to ensure that content is refreshed at appropriate intervals. The system also helps provide consistency in user experience.

Questions about the Content Migration

What is the “Information Architecture” document for my department?

The information architecture document shows a snapshot of your department's content in the overall website structure. This is your roadmap for migrating content, as it shows you where content from your legacy site must go in the new website.

There is content on my legacy site that I cannot find on my information architecture document. What do I do?

Contact University Web Communications at webcomm@odu.edu with the content in question and we will evaluate it and provide guidance.

In what order should I migrate my content?

There is no prescribed order. However, we recommend that you work through your site as though you were browsing every link. So you would likely start at the top of your left menu and work your way down.

What is the typical page set-up or structure?

The website style guide provides general layouts that should be followed. There is also a list of "best practices" examples for you to view and model your pages after.

How do I know when my content is fully migrated?

Your department's index of content is a valuable tool for this. The index of content should very closely match the Information Architecture document. Start with this and browse each page and make certain that there is content there and that it is complete. Then browse through your legacy site like you would your hotel room at the end of a trip, making certain you've left nothing behind.

I think I’ve migrated everything, what’s next?

The content owner must submit the Migration Approval Form. Within 5 business days of the content owner submitting this form, University Web Communications will review your migration work and make any necessary fixes or ask some questions to make certain that the content is correct. Once your department and Web Communications are both satisfied that the migration is complete, your new pages will be activated to the public and your legacy website will be archived in its entirety. Your access to the legacy site (and WebEdit) will be removed, as the only page left on your legacy site will be an index.shtml file that redirects users from your old URL to the new one.
