Remote Desktop Access to the University
The University supports the use of Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to centrally supported windows based desktops across the campus. This function is provided to improve telecomputing services and provide for more robust access to University resources.
To utilize RDP each user must fulfill the following three requirements:
- The user must obtain permission from their immediate supervisor to access ODU work resources remotely during regular and non regular hours for work purposes.
- To begin the process to gain RDP access, the user should submit a request in Footprints. The user's immediate supervisor should be included on the request.
- The supervisor should respond to the email from the Footprints system providing authorization for the user to have permission to use RDP for business purposes.
- The user should follow the steps in the VPN Access procedure to complete the Blackboard course and gain VPN access (See the VPN Access Procedure PDF).
- Once VPN access is obtained, the TSP for the user requesting access will be notified of configuration changes required to provide access on the user's desktop.
- Access to RDP must be performed through the ODU Campus VPN
- VPN clients for various operating systems are available for download in the Software/Services catalog.
**Remote Desktop access through the VPN will not be provided for non-exempt and hourly employees due to existing COVA and ODU employment regulations**
Please note that users will be responsible for installing and supporting their PC being used for VPN access and the required VPN client.
Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Old Dominion University's Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides an encrypted tunnel between a PC or computing device and the VPN device here at the University. By connecting to the University via the VPN, users can interact with University IT systems as if they were on campus.
This tunnel allows all forms of communications and applications through and its main purpose is encryption of data and authentication of user credentials. ODU currently provides VPN access for general use by faculty and staff.
A VPN account is needed for:
- Remote access to network drives and folders
- The use of SSH or Microsoft Remote Desktop
- Remote access to Banner
Use of the VPN is encouraged for all forms of work or access to University systems. All systems that are used to access the VPN must comply with the ODU Virtual Private Network Standard.
To use the VPN, a user must request a VPN account, successfully complete the Blackboard course called "OCCS Remote Users Security Training" and download and install the VPN Client. Instructions on accessing this course and obtaining VPN access can be found in the VPN Access Procedure.
Remote Access to Faculty/Staff Files and Shares
Typically, when you are on campus and logged into your work desktop or in a computer lab, access to your files stored on the University's Active Directory servers is established automatically when you log into your workstation.
If you are not using a desktop connected to the University's network, then you will need a configure a connection to access and manage files stored on the University's servers.
To remotely access files stored on ODU's Active Directory servers, faculty and staff must connect through the Campus VPN. From the VPN, faculty and staff can access their files using WebDAV or by Mapping a Network Drive using the instructions below for your current operating system. If using WebDAV, faculty and staff will be connecting to https://myfiles.odu.edu. WebDAV links are not a web connection (URL) and will not work using a browser.
