Outdoor Adventure Program

The Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) is a program run through Old Dominion University Recreation and Wellness department. Goals of the program include increasing participants' appreciation and protection of natural resources as well as opportunities for personal exploration, growth and leadership development through their participation in outdoor activities.

Let your adventure begin at Old Dominion University with Outdoor Adventure Programs. whether you are interested in learning a new skill or just trying something new, OAP offers diverse and exciting opportunities for outdoor recreation and education that will last a lifetime. OAP provides quality and affortable programming all year long for ODU students as well as for faculty and staff SRC members. OAP offers the following:

Special Events

Jammin on the Lawn

Join the OAP in celebrating all things outdoors! There will be a slackline competition, food, live music and prizes, along with smores!

Dates: Friday, September 19 at 6 p.m. - Saturday, September 20 at 12 a.m.
Registration for this FREE event begins on August 25.

Adventure Trips

All OAP trips are open to current ODU students, faculty and staff. All trips require registration prior to the mandatory pre-trip meetings. Trips that do not have a pre-trip meeting have a registration deadline of noon on the day of the trip. You can register for any trip in the Outdoor Adventure Center. When registering, you must bring a valid ODU ID, your health insurance, and payment. Payment must be made at the time of registration and can be made in cash or check.

Fall 2014 Adventure Trips

Surf's up, dude! Come shred the surf at Virginia's own North End! Grab your towel and the Coppertone 35, because we are surfing our heart's out! Whether you're a beginner, or a seasoned surfer, come on and paddle out with us for the day. Trip includes: trip leaders, transportation, and surf gear.

Date: Saturday, September 6 & Sunday, September 14
Cost: $10 - ODU student, $20 - SRC F/S Member
Registration: Opens August 25

Join us for a day of exploration in our own backyard as we explore Norfolk and try out the up and coming sport of Geocaching. Trip leaders, equipment, instruction, and transportation are included.

Registration: Opens August 25

Grab a paddle and get ready for an awesome trip from Whitehurst Beach and up the Elizabeth River. Participants will have the opportunity to either kayak or canoe based on conditions and group interest. Trip leaders, equipment, instruction, and transportation are included.

The endless summer is here and we're riding it all the way out! Why stay inside when you can de-stress with some yoga and surf under the warm September sun? Join us again, for another early morning surf session. Trip includes trip leaders, transportation, yoga instruction, and surf gear.

Everyone loves a biker's playground! Join the ?OAP as we take a wild mountain biking adventure through a multitude of man-made jumps, hills, and switchbacks. Trip includes trip leaders, transportation, and mountain biking gear.

It is an endless summer indeed! Bring out your adventurous side as we head on down to beachtown for a weekend of surfing and biking at the always beautiful, Ocracoke Island in North Carolina. Breathe in that salty air in your lungs and sign up for a fabulous time of camping, paddling, and peddling! Trip includes trip leaders, camping fees, transportation, biking, surfing, and camping gear.

Cost: $30 - ODU student, $60 - SRC F/S Member

Looking for your next thrill of an adventure? Look no further! Join the OAP as we venture out to new heights climbing Elizabeth Furnace. Enhance your climbing skills and knowledge as our experienced trip leaders show you the ropes! Trip includes trip leaders, transportation, entrance fees, camping and rock climbing, surfing, and camping gear.

Date: Friday, October 3 - Sunday, October 5
Cost: $30 - ODU student, $60 - SRC F/S Member
Registration: Opens August 25

Experience what may be the most exciting Fall Break ever and join the Outdoor Adventure Program for a trip to backpack in West Virginia's Dolly Sods Wilderness and climb a Via Ferretta mountaineering system, a European style of climbing on cables already mounted into the mountain. Trip includes trip leaders camping fees, transportation, and camping gear.

Cost: $150 - ODU student, $150 - SRC F/S Member

Fall is here and the cool weather is near! You know what that means? Let's go camping! Join the OAP as we drive out to the Pipsico Scout Reservation in Surry County, Virginia, for some hiking and camping. Immerse yourself in the changing colors of autumn as you learn the basics of setting up tents, cooking in the wilderness, and so much more! Trip leaders, transportation, entrance fees, and camping gear are included.

Cost: $30 - ODU student, $40 - SRC F/S Member
Registration: Opens August 25

Join the Outdoor Adventure Program for an exciting backwater adventure through the North and Snake rivers in Munden Point. This trip will be a touring kayak trip and you will learn how to handle and maneuver a touring kayak during the pre-trip meeting. Trip includes trip leaders, transportation, entrance fees, and gear.

Indoor Rock Climbing

The two-story rock climbing wall at the Student Recreation Center is a challenge that will test both your physical and mental toughness.

Basics Clinics

Basic Clinics are offered during the semester and are mandatory of Recreation and Wellness members who are interested in climbing at The Wall. The clinics are given by climbing wall staff and include: Instruction on climbing equipment, Climbing knots, Practice on how to belay, Climbing techniques and a final belay test. Every participant must pass the Belay Test prior to climbing The Wall. Participants with prior experience may test out and not take the clinic.

Special Events

6th Annual Climb On Competition: Eastern Edge Climbing Series

Come out and climb in ODU's 6th Annual inter-collegiate climbing competition. Compete in the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced skill brackets for prizes and fun! Pre-registration includes a t-shirt, lunch, and a door prize raffle ticket; not to mention some great climbing and a festive atmosphere.

Date: Saturday, October 25; 11am - 7pm
Cost: $10 - ODU Student, $20 - SRC F/S Member
Registration: At the Outdoor Adventure Center or the climbing wall. Register by Friday, October 10 to receive a t-shirt and food. Walk-in registration is welcome from 11am - noon during check-in on the day of the competition.

Gobins, Ghouls, and Grigris

Come dressed up in your best climbing-friendly costume! We will have a best costume competition with prizes! Halloween-inspired activities will be going on throughout the night including a climbing game called G.H.O.S.T.

Outdoor Adventure Center

The Resource Center includes a variety of books, maps and files on local, national and international outdoor recreation locations, outdoor "hard skills" and leadership resources. Stop by the center and an OAP staff member will help you plan your next outdoor adventure!

Week Long Rentals:

The Bike Share Program offers FREE week-long bike cruisers to students that come with a U-lock, basket, and helmet.

Cost: FREE

Registration: Bikes are available on a first come first serve basis.

Semester Long Rentals:

The Bike Share Program has 10 semester-long hybrid bikes available for the fall semester. The bikes come with a U-lock and helmet.

Cost: $30

Learn how to repair simple issues on your bike including flat tires, broken chains, and the day-to-day maintenance of riding. We will be meeting in the OAC's bike/skate shop. Available upon request.

This clinic will teach you how to use holds properly, how to improve your footwork, and how to position your body properly among many others things!

Grab your bike and meet us outside of the OAC every Tuesday as we tour the city of Norfolk on a 10 mile bike ride along the Elizabeth River Trail and Norfolk's established bike routes!

This group run is open to runners of all abilities, no previous urban trail running experience is necessary. A Fitness and Wellness staff member will guide you along our local urban trails.
