Required Assessments

Old Dominion University approved teacher education programs require passing scores in the Virginia Board of Education prescribed assessments: Praxis Core Academic Skills Tests, Praxis II, VCLA, RVE for early childhood education, elementary education, special education, and reading specialists, and completion of training in Child Abuse Recognition and Intervention certification and Emergency First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE)

For teachers seeking an initial license with endorsements in Early/Primary Education PK-3, Elementary Education PK-6, Special Education - General Curriculum, Special Education - Hearing Impairments, and Special Education - Visual Impairments, the required reading assessment will be Reading for Virginia Educators: Elementary and Special Education (RVE). For teachers seeking an endorsement as a Reading Specialist, the required assessment will be Reading for Virginia Educators: Reading Specialist (RVE for Reading Specialists).

Approved Scores

  • List of Approved Scores by the Virginia Board of Education
  • RVE: Early/Primary Education PreK-3, Elementary Education PreK-6, Special Education-General Curriculum, Special Education Education-Hearing Impairments, and Special Education -Visual Impairments approved passing score is 157.

  • RVE: Reading Specialist approved passing score is 162.

Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA)

Individuals seeking initial licensure must submit a passing VCLA score report to the Office of Teacher Education & Advising prior to the orientation meeting for the teacher candidate internship. For more information on the VCLA Reading and Writing subtests go to Pearson Vue

Candidates must take both subtests, Reading and Writing, to achieve a VCLA passing score:

  • Reading Code VC091, passing score is 235
  • Writing Code VC092, passing score is 235
  • VCLA Reading and Writing Code VC 099, if taking both subtests at the same time
  • Composite score of 470 (combined reading and writing scores)

Child Abuse and Neglect Training

Individuals seeking an initial license and license renewal must complete training in child abuse recognition and intervention in accordance with curriculum guidelines approved by the Virginia Board of Education.

The Virginia Department of Education requires all initially licensed teachers, school counselors, administrators, and other school personnel receive training on child abuse recognition and intervention. This training is completed and verified through specific professional education courses in Old Dominion University's approved teacher education programs. The following courses will require completion of this training:

  • ECI 675 (prior to Fall 2010)
  • ESSE 400/500 or SPED 400/500 (beginning Fall 2010)
  • SSE 413/513 or ESSE 313 or SPED 313 (beginning Fall 2010)
  • ELS 657
  • HE 481/581
  • OTED 408/508 or SEPS 408/508
  • COUN 631

Students admitted in an approved teacher preparation program and who transfer courses that meet the child abuse and neglect requirement must provide documentation that they have met the recognition of child abuse and neglect standards.

Once you have completed the online training, there will be an online test and certification providing documentation that you have met the Virginia Department of Education mandated requirement. A copy of this certification should be submitted to the Virginia Department of Education, your local hiring school division, or the ODU Teacher Education Services Office, ED 152, when applying for licensure.

Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Intervention Training Curriculum Guidelines were developed by the Virginia Board of Education and the Department of Social Services and amended by the General Assembly, January 30, 2004.

First Aid/CPR/AED

All candidates enrolled in a state-approved teacher education program must meet the state of Virginia requirement for certification or training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated exernal defibrillators.

The certification or training program shall be based on the current national evidenced-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator, such as a program developed by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
