On this page you will find the RECOMMENDED and MINIMUM notebook specifications for computing at Old Dominion University. These specifications should be used as guidance for purchasing a notebook or bringing a computer you already own to campus.

* Recommendations for systems that will run Adobe Creative Suite applications, engineering programs, and other graphic/video intensive applications.

Your computer system is like a car in many ways; it has to be properly maintained and cared for and it runs better when it gets a little TLC. Just like you wouldn't put diesel in a gasoline engine - some systems run best with certain software and hardware. So what do you need to make sure your on the right track?

System Software/Hardware Recommendations

Plug-ins

Anti-virus

Any anti-virus system is recommended; ODU provides
McAfee 8.8i for free. Here.

Productivity Suite

  • Microsoft Office 2013 (PC)
  • Microsoft Office 2011 (Apple)

Microsoft Office is recommended because it is the standard
on campus but any productivity suite that is compatible with
MS Office can be used.

Other Software

Anti-theft

  • Physical - A security cable lock is recommended to keep
    your computer secure in public locations.
  • Software - Computrace Lojack for Laptops

Bandwidth Off-campus

1.5 Mbps is the minimum recommended upload/
download speed. Test your home internet speed:

Webcam & Microphone

Any Microsoft compatible webcam/microphone is
recommended if you will be participating in 2-way video
conference class meetings.

4 Key Considerations...

  1. Size & Portability: Make sure yoursystem is compact enough to travel well; it will log many miles with you.

  2. Value: What kind of system are yougetting for your money? Compare specifications, warranty, etc.

  3. Peripherals & Accessories: What else will you need to be up and running? Maybe a printer or wireless mouse? Visit the Monarch Techstore in Webb Center or visit the online store at www.shoptechstore.odu.edu for information and pricing on accessories, hardware, and software.

  4. Special Considerations: If you are declaring a major be sure to check with your department for special requirements or considerations before making a purchase.
