Jerry Robertson Retirement
Jerry Robertson received his BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MS in Engineering Mechanics from the Batten College of Engineering and Technology. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as Certified Manufacturing Engineer by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. A lifelong resident of Hampton Roads, Jerry began his professional career at ODU in 1981 as a Lab Instrument Maker and went on to manage the College’s model shop until he was appointed the College’s Resident Engineer. He was the first (and possibly only) classified ODU employee to be granted a research award, collecting strain data from F-14 aircraft wings.
Jerry Robertson currently serves as Norfolk’s Economic Development Authority Chairman, on the Governor’s Manufacturing Development Commission and as a board member of the Barrett Haven Transitional Home for Women. Under Jerry’s watch, the Business Gateway has grown from an applied technology center within the Batten College of Engineering and Technology to incorporate five centers to help small businesses: the Hampton Roads Procurement Assistance Center, the Veterans’ Business Outreach Center, the Women’s Business Outreach Center, and the Small Business Transportation Resource Center as well as Launch Hampton Roads which encourages employment through entrepreneurship. After 32 years of service to Old Dominion University, Jerry Robertson plans to do technical consulting in his “retirement” and he will continue to be active in community service.
There will be a retirement reception in honor of Jerry Robertson on August 26th, from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to 757-683-3464 or E-mail email@example.com.
Clair Dorsey has been named Interim Director for the Old Dominion University Business Gateway upon the retirement of Jerry Robertson, who had held that position since the Gateway’s inception as the Virginia Applied Technology and Professional Development Center. Ms. Dorsey began her career at ODU in 1995 as Director of the Technology Applications Center in the Batten College of College of Engineering and Technology and has served as Director of Professional Development and Continuing Education with the Business Gateway since 2008. In the private sector, she also held positions as Marketing Manager and National Quality Manager for several large manufacturing companies.
