ODU Visiting Writer in Residence John Jeremiah Sullivan Appearing at Two Upcoming Events

John Jeremiah Sullivan, Old Dominion University's spring 2013 visiting writer in residence, will speak at two public events this week.

On Wednesday, Feb. 27, Sullivan will lead a craft talk on "The Essay and the 'Mag Piece': A Double Helix." It will run from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Perry Library Learning Commons, rooms 1310-1311.

That appearance will be followed Thursday, Feb. 28, with a reading at the University Village Bookstore from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Sullivan, who lives with his wife and daughters in Wilmington, N.C., is a New York Times Magazine writer as well as the southern editor of the Paris Review. He also contributes to GQ, Harper's Magazine and the Oxford American. Aside from that work, he most recently authored "Pulphead: Essays," which earned top book review accolades from The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Time magazine, The Boston Globe and the Library Journal.

In its listing of "100 Notable Books of 2011," The New York Times Book Review noted, of "Pulphead": "These thrumming, intelligent magazine essays highlight Sullivan's interest in the rare cultural nexus where genuine artistry intersects with commercial popularity."
