"The Old Dominion University Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative will bring the university and the region's foremost experts together to find solutions to the challenges facing our region and other regions globally."

- President John Broderick, August 24, 2010

Since 2010, ODU's Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative has (CCSLRI) facilitated research and education in all aspects of climate change and sea level rise. Because of our location there is special emphasis on adaptation to increased flooding because of sea level rise. There are many other aspects of climate change affecting coastal cities such as public health or disaster preparedness that the initiative also addressed.

The Mitigation and Adaptation Research Institute (MARI) is an outgrowth of the CCSLRI efforts. MARI works with stakeholders within and outside the region to generate knowledge that can enable them not only to reduce the negative aspects of climate change and sea-level rise, but also to make positive use of the opportuities in the coming changes. To learn more about MARI, visit the MARI web workspace or if you have a question or comment contact those listed in the right hand column.

At the local level the University provides appropriate leadership to regional leaders and distribute accurate information to the citizens. At national and international levels faculty researchers and educators will develop projects at other locations using the knowledge gained locally.

The University has been building the CCSLRI through internal research grants, faculty hires at all levels and all disciplines and other actions to help faculty participate. MARI works with a number of Related Research Groups.

The former CCSLRI, now MARI, Newsletters provide quarterly updates and a good overview of recent activities.

The University now continues to build MARI as an Institute that brings together ODU faculty for climate change-releated research. Many different research centers and groups support and are affilitated with MARI.
