Old Dominion University's Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association has been awarded with 2019 Gold Chapter Honors from the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (National NSSLHA).

National NSSLHA Chapter Honors are awarded to affiliated NSSLHA chapters that demonstrate an outstanding effort to support National NSSLHA's mission to inspire, empower, and support students in communication sciences and disorders programs.

ODU's NSSLHA Chapter, which is open to undergraduate and graduate speech-language pathology students, has three main goals:

To encourage professional interest among students in the study of human communication sciences and disorders;

To maintain communication and dissemination of professional information; and

To provide a vehicle for student representation with regard to professional concerns.

In addition, the chapter is also dedicated to advocacy efforts and knowledge transmission as it relates to issues in the field of speech-language pathology, as well as community service through partnerships and volunteerism.

According to Dr. Anne Michalek, faculty advisor and assistant professor of communication sciences and disorders, the chapter has had several noteworthy accomplishments including consistently facilitating yearly fundraising events which support local and national causes, such as Families of Autistic Children of Tidewater and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHF); organizing the first student conference at ODU; and partnering with Student Council for Exceptional Children during volunteer events in the community.

"During 2018-2019 academic year, ODU's NSSLHA chapter has remained dedicated to advocacy and community service," said Michalek. "The students' efforts demonstrate their strong level of commitment to supporting the field of communication sciences and disorders."
