Military Leave

Employees who are members of any reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States are eligible to take military leave with pay for up to 21 workdays in each federal fiscal year for federally funded military training duty.

Military leave for up to 21 workdays in each fiscal year is granted to members of the Virginia Defense Force or the National Defense Executive Reserve, when it is for training specifically approved by the Governor or his/her designee.

  • The federal fiscal year runs October 1 through September 30.
  • Employees must furnish their supervisor with some type of documentation from a responsible military official indicating the dates and type of required military training. Notice should be given prior to the beginning of the training. In cases of emergency call-up, employees shall notify their supervisor of the call-up for duty as soon as possible.
  • Employees requiring more than 21 workdays for military training or to attend weekend drills shall be granted the time off for their military duty. At the employee's option, these absences may be charged to the employee's annual or compensatory leave balances, or leave without pay.
  • Military leave without pay will be granted for active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States. Contact Human Resources for more information should this situation occur.
