Children's Beginning Music Theory & Composition

For students between the ages of 6 and 12. An introduction to the language of music, both written and aural. Students should be currently enrolled in private music lessons or in a school band, orchestra, or choir.

Registration Begins: December 1, 2023

Cancellation

To withdraw from a course you must send a request in writing to oducmd@odu.edu or call 757-683-4075 one business day prior to the start date of the course. Failure to attend a course does not constitute withdrawal. Course registration fees, less a $25 processing fee will be refunded via check per Old Dominion University policy (we are unable to return money to a debit or credit card). There are no refunds once the class has begun.

Instructor

Dennis Northerner

Dennis Holden-Northerner earned his Masters in Music Education and Bachelor of Music in Music Education with an emphasis on applied percussion performance at Old Dominion University under Professor David L. Walker. He teaches and performs all over the Hampton Roads area in all areas of percussion, such as snare drum, mallet percussion, drum set, timpani, auxiliary percussion, and hand drums.

Prepare the students to:

  • Analyze the material they are working on
  • Understand and read notes on treble and bass clefs
  • Understand time signatures, note values, and rhythms
  • Recognize intervals by ear and notation
  • Understand Scales and Triads
  • Understand 4-measure phrases
  • Receive encouragement to write and notate simple melodies and harmonies
