ODU Graduate Adriane Brown to Give Landmark Executive-in-Residence Address

Adriane M. Brown, an Old Dominion University alumna and one of the 100 most powerful African American executives in the United States, as chosen by Black Enterprise magazine, will return to campus this month as the Landmark Executive-in-Residence speaker.

Brown, who received an honorary doctorate from ODU in 2009, will speak Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Room 1005 of Constant Hall, home of the College of Business and Public Administration.

The address is free and is open to the campus community, and will run from 12:30-1:20 p.m. Pizza and beverages will be served.

Brown is currently president and chief operating officer of Intellectual Ventures, a privately held invention capital company founded in 2000.

Before joining Intellectual Ventures, she served as president and CEO of Honeywell Transportation Systems. Over the course of 10 years at Honeywell, serving the aerospace and automotive markets in positions of leadership, Brown earned a reputation for driving business results, strengthening customer relationships, and inspiring and leading talented people to meet business objectives.

Prior to Honeywell, Brown spent 19 years at Corning, where she began her career as a shift supervisor. She later moved into sales and customer service roles, and became vice president and general manager of Corning's Environmental Products Division.

Brown currently serves on the board of directors for the Pacific Science Center, whose mission is to inspire lifelong interest in science, technology and math. She also serves on the board of directors of Jobs for America's Graduates, the nation's leading dropout prevention program.

Brown earned a bachelor's degree in environmental health from ODU, graduating in 1980. She also has a master's in management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was a Sloan Fellow.

The ODU business college's Landmark Executive-in-Residence speaker series is designed to enrich students' entrepreneurial spirit, their awareness of the success that can be built on their academic experience and their understanding of the importance of leading with integrity.

The program is dedicated to bringing accomplished business leaders, many of whom are ODU alumni, to campus to share their history and vision, giving students the opportunity to learn firsthand the strategies and experiences that forge great ethical global leaders.

Established in 2001, the Landmark Executive-in-Residence program is funded by an endowment from a group of former Landmark Communications executives in honor of the late Frank Batten Sr., former chairman of the executive committee of the Landmark board and the first rector of the ODU Board of Visitors.
