Sandy Waters Elected to NACADA National Board of Directors

Sandy Waters, Old Dominion University's assistant dean for advising and transfer programs, has been elected to the national board of directors of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

Waters was notified in early March of her election to a three-year term on the three-person board. The other board members are from the University of Louisville and the University of Texas at Austin. They will serve from October 2013 to 2016.

NACADA is the leader within the global education community for the theory, delivery, application and advancement of academic advising to enhance student learning and development. Its mission includes championing the educational role of academic advisors to enhance student learning and development in a diverse world, and anticipating the academic advising needs of 21st century students, advisors and institutions.

Waters' election to the board is an example of the campus-wide effort to provide ODU students with the tools to succeed, which is listed as the first priority by President John Broderick in the university's Master Plan.

The creation of the Office of Student Engagement and Enrollment Services, the University Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence, and the Student Success Center and Learning Commons as enhancements to Perry Library are all tangible signs of ODU's commitment to student success.

Provost Carol Simpson said she was "delighted" with Waters' election to the NACADA board.

"This really is a perfectly aligned honor, especially in view of all the hard work and thought that she has put into ensuring our students have access to the best possible academic advice," Simpson said. "Her election to the board will mean that she shares our own best practices with others - and brings back some good ideas for us to implement here, too."

The National Academic Advising Association is an association of professional advisors, counselors, faculty, administrators and students working to enhance the educational development of students.

NACADA promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students.
