University Dance Theatre Spring Concert Features Faculty, Students and Guest Artists

The Old Dominion dance program presents its annual University Dance Theatre Spring Concert April 17-20 at the University Theatre. Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. each night, and there will be a matinee performance at 2 p.m. April 20.
The concert will feature modern and ballroom dance choreographed by ODU faculty members and selected students. The performance will also include a contemporary work by Washington, D.C.-based choreographer Christopher K. Morgan. Morgan created a new work for ODU dancers, titled "The Opacity of Memory," during a two-part residency this spring. This group piece involves intricate partnering and inventive, articulate vocabulary.
Acting dance program director Marilyn Marloff will present a new work, titled "Lumen Sensibus." Inspired by the architectural complexity of a European cathedral and the vastness and simplicity of its inner space, the piece explores how "empty space" is made profound and sacred by its container.
Megan Thompson, a full-time member of the dance faculty, will recreate a solo, titled "Eating.Drinking.Breathing." The dance explores our awareness and feelings about these essential actions. The solo is being set on five different dancers and will be performed by a different dancer each performance.
"Show, Struggle, Create" is the combination of three solos based on a choreographic research project by adjunct faculty member and guest artist Katie Iacono. The study asks three questions when a choreographer must create work under a physically impaired condition: Is the process physically stimulating for the choreographer and dancers? Is the process creatively stimulating for the choreographer and dancers? Is the artistic vision of the choreographer satisfied?
Adjunct faculty member and guest artist Rachel Thorne Germond will present a group work for seven dancers, titled "Sweep" (part 2), danced to music by composer Terry Riley. The choreography comes out of an improvisational structure.
Another adjunct faculty member and guest artist, Christina Yoshida, will present a quartet to music by Zoe Keating, which explores Yoshida's current pregnancy.
The concert will also include a premiere by adjunct faculty member and guest artist Wesley Acker and two solos choreographed by students Lee Gibaldi Knight and Laveca Latimore.
