Weekend Work at Downtown Tunnel Could Impact I-264 Traffic
May 16, 2013
Eastbound drivers on Interstate 264 could face delays at the Downtown Tunnel Friday evening through Sunday as crews install traffic sensors in the roadway.
During the May 17-20 work, all lanes of the Downtown Tunnel will remain open, but I-264 traffic heading eastbound will be reduced to a single lane for about 150 yards beginning at the Effingham Street on-ramp, according to Elizabeth River Crossings, which operates the Downtown and Midtown tunnels.
An ERC spokeswoman suggests motorists use the Midtown Tunnel if possible over the weekend, and especially try to avoid the Downtown Tunnel during peak traffic periods on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Crews will perform the same type of work, installing loop detection sensors in I-264's westbound lanes, from May 31 through June 3. During that time, westbound travel will be reduced to a single lane from the Berkley Bridge through the Downtown Tunnel.
