Virginia Opera to Introduce Upcoming Performance at ODU Event Jan. 22
January 21, 2014
On Wednesday, at Old Dominion University, the Wilhelmshaven Committee of the Norfolk Sister City Association will sponsor an introduction to the Virginia Opera's upcoming German-language production of "Ariadne auf Naxos," by Richard Strauss.
The Jan. 22 performance, titled "Ariadne auf Naxos: A High-concept Project," will be held at 2 p.m. in the ODU Batten Arts and Letters Building's Burgess Room (Room 9024 on the ninth floor). It will be presented by Glenn Winters, community outreach musical director of the Virginia Opera.
According to a performance description: "The recent film 'Cowboys and Aliens' is what Hollywood calls 'high concept,' meaning it has a can't-miss premise one can summarize in a few words. The same holds true for Strauss's eccentric comedy 'Ariadne auf Naxos' in which, as we shall see, the premise consists of a troupe of comedians running amok in a serious Greek drama, set to some of the most thrillingly beautiful music in all of opera."
