ODU Prof to Discuss Students’ Comprehensive Survey of Monarch Football Fans on ‘With Good Reason’

Last fall at Old Dominion University, Kiran Karande, professor of marketing in the College of Business and Public Administration, led a class of M.B.A. students doing the first comprehensive survey and study of Monarch football fans.

The students interviewed members of a focus group and distributed a comprehensive survey, presenting the results to ODU Athletics in December. Karande's class looked at exactly who the football fans are at ODU - and what keeps them coming back.

Karande, now associate dean of the business college, will speak about the innovative project during a broadcast of the public radio show "With Good Reason."

"With Good Reason" airs at 1 p.m. Thursday on WHRV-FM (89.5), and at other days and times on public radio stations across Virginia and around the country. The hourlong show, produced by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, spotlights the achievements of Virginia public universities in scholarly research and innovation.

The show Karande is appearing on, "Good Sport," will air the week of March 1-8 on public radio stations across Virginia (March 6 on WHRV). The segment also features Patrick Rhamey of Virginia Military Institute, who has studied events like the Olympic Games. Rhamey has found that success in the competition is more important from a political standpoint than actually hosting the event. Also on the show, Alan Levinovitz of James Madison University will speak about the excesses of big-time college athletics.

"With Good Reason" has twice won the Gabriel Award for Best Documentary/Public Affairs Program. It also is the recipient of top honors from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and won a second-place award in the Public Radio News Directors competition.
