DCOE Assistant Dean Tapped to Receive National Outstanding Advising Award

Leigh Butler, assistant dean for Teacher Education Services in the Darden College of Education, has been selected to receive the Outstanding Advising Award - Academic Advising Administrator by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

NACADA is an international, educational association of individuals engaged in the work of academic advising. Its annual awards program honors individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising.

Butler joined ODU as the director of Teacher Education Services in 2001.

She received the award for Teletechnet Teacher of the Year in 2000-01, as an adjunct instructor, and the J. Worth Pickering University Administrator of the Year Award in 2008-09. In 2010, she was appointed the assistant dean of Teacher Education Services and Advising, effective fall 2011.

She has served on numerous committees while at the university. Butler currently chairs the Teacher Education Council, and has served as the editor of Virginia's Association of Teacher Educators (ATE-VA) journal, The Teacher Educators, since 2011.

"I am humbled and appreciate the nomination from my colleagues and all their work to make this happen," said Butler.

She will receive the award at NACADA's national meeting in October in Minneapolis.
