ODU Prof Tom Chapman Named Recipient of National Teaching Award

Old Dominion University assistant professor Tom Chapman was recently named the 2014 recipient of the Higher Education Distinguished Teaching Award from the National Council for Geographic Education.

A panel of reviewers selected Chapman for the award given annually to recognize and support college and university level instructors who have made "extraordinary contributions" in teaching Geography.

The National Council for Geographic Education, which was organized in 1915, "works to enhance the status and quality of geography teaching and learning," according to the group's website.

"This is a remarkable accomplishment and a strong reflection of Tom's commitment to teaching excellence," said Francis Adams, chair of ODU's Department of Political Science and Geography.

Chapman has been an assistant professor of Geography at ODU since 2009.

In 2013, he was honored with an Excellence in Teaching Award by the South Eastern Division of the Association of American Geographers (SEDAAG) for "sustained excellence and creativity in teaching, as well as his exceptional commitment to effective geography teaching beyond the immediate classroom."
