ODU V-DAY 2015: The Vagina Monologues and One Billion Rising Revolution
February 05, 2015
ODU's annual celebration of the global movement to end violence against women and girls, V-Day, will take place on February 13-15 with four public events.
The ODU Women's Center's annual benefit production of "The Vagina Monologues," affirming women's sexuality and strength through theatrical monologues of wit and grace, will be held at the ODU University Theater at 7p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14 with a matinee performance on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 2p.m.
Also on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m., on the Runte Quad, the University community will rise up dancing and drumming to take part in the "One Billion Rising Revolution." This expression of solidarity with the world's one billion women affected by sexual and relationship violence seeks to peacefully focus attention on the injustices faced daily by one in three women around the world. A brief keynote address will be delivered by Ruth Jones, executive director of the YWCA of South Hampton Roads.
These creative events aim to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of anti-violence organizations and advocates working to protect our communities from the crimes of incest, rape, battery, female genital mutilation and human trafficking. Locally, funds raised by this year's performance of "The Vagina Monologues" will benefit the YWCA South Hampton Roads' support services for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.
