Navy Station Norfolk Commander to Speak at ODU Libraries Event

Capt. Robert E. Clark, Commander of Naval Station Norfolk (NSN), and an Old Dominion University graduate, will speak about the history of the world's largest naval base during an event at ODU's Learning Commons @ Perry Library on Thursday, March 19.

The event, part of the Friends of the ODU Libraries lecture series, is free and open to the public. It begins at 7:15 p.m. in the Learning Commons at the front of Perry Library.

Seating is limited for the event. Please RSVP to 757-683-4141 or njustice@odu.edu. Refreshments will be served following the lecture.

In his talk, "Naval Station Norfolk: A Historical Perspective," Clark will explain how Naval Station Norfolk came into being - from humble beginnings as a marsh to its strategic role in modern military operations. Clark, who assumed command of Naval Station Norfolk in March 2014, earned a BS in mechanical engineering technology from ODU in 1989, and was commissioned through the Hampton Roads Naval ROTC.

Situated on more than 4,000 acres along one of the world's greatest natural harbors, the station is home to U.S. Navy warships, submarines, aircraft carriers, naval air squadrons, helicopters and the Defense Department's busiest supply centers.

The address is part of a series that celebrates the integral role of the ODU Libraries to students, faculty, staff and the community by showcasing the interests and scholarship of ODU faculty members and alumni.

Members of Friends of the Old Dominion University Libraries receive library borrowing privileges, a preview of the annual book sale, the Friends of the Libraries Newsletter and opportunities for volunteer service to the ODU Libraries.
