New Director of Internal Audit Announced

Chief Operating Officer David Harnage announced to the Board of Visitors the appointment of Amanda Skaggs as the new Director of Internal Audit at its meeting on April 23, following a search that involved representatives from the Board's Audit Committee.

Skaggs has nearly 12 years of higher education experience in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with 11 of those years being spent in the audit field working for or providing audit services to higher education institutions including Old Dominion, Norfolk State University, Christopher Newport University and the Virginia Community College System.

She began her career at Old Dominion University in 2007 as a Senior Auditor and this past year served as interim director. During her career at Old Dominion, she co-led the effort to purchase and adapt new audit software for the Internal Audit Department, which included converting and improving audit methods and processes and developing a user's manual to help promote consistency across different engagements and audit team members.

Last year, she and the ODU's audit team completed a five-year external assessment that rates internal audit departments on their application of the Institute of Internal Auditor's auditing standards, for which ODU received a rating of "generally conforms," the highest rating awarded for this type of review. Skaggs' involvement on the University's Compliance and Policy Review committees has also fostered working relationship across the Old Dominion community.

Skaggs has a Bachelor's degree in finance with a leadership minor and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). She also holds Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA).

As director, Skaggs supervises an audit team of four and serves as a Higher Education Specialist with the Auditor of Public Accounts.
