Physicist Charles Hyde wins SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award

Charles Hyde will be honored at a SCHEV luncheon in Richmond on Feb. 16.

Charles Hyde, an Old Dominion University physics professor and Eminent Scholar, will receive a 2016 Outstanding Faculty Award next month from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).
"I am thrilled to win this award," said Hyde, who is Old Dominion's 29th SCHEV honoree and the second physicist in a row, following Gail Dodge last year. "I would especially like to thank my colleagues and students in the physics department who have made ODU such a great place to work for the past 20 years."
Hyde is among 13 faculty members from throughout the state who will be honored Feb. 16 at a luncheon at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond. Each award consists of an engraved plaque and $5,000 underwritten by the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources. Dominion is the parent company of Dominion Virginia Power.
Prior to that event, the recipients will be introduced on the floor of the General Assembly.
Hyde is an internationally recognized leader in experimental nuclear physics and as a builder of international research collaborations. A longtime researcher at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Hyde has been instrumental in helping to develop the field known as Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering.
"Professor Hyde is extremely active in research, teaching and service at the University," said Charles Sukenik, chair of Old Dominion's Department of Physics. "He is an excellent teacher of courses ranging from Conceptual Physics to our most advanced graduate courses, he serves as the physics chief departmental advisor and he is very active in public outreach activities. Professor Hyde sets the standard for faculty excellence at ODU, and so it is most fitting that he is recognized with the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award."
SCHEV is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its program to honor outstanding faculty for excellence in teaching, research, knowledge integration and public service in all public and private Virginia institutions of higher education.
"With Dominion's support, this annual recognition of Virginia's most outstanding faculty members is truly one of the agency's most rewarding activities," said SCHEV director Peter Blake. "We are honored to highlight the accomplishments of these professors who lend their extraordinary talents to their students, their institutions and the Commonwealth of Virginia."
The 13 recipients were selected from a pool of 92 nominees based on accomplishments that strongly reflect the missions of their respective colleges and universities.
"When you read the nominations, you are struck by the passion these teachers exhibit for their subject matter and their devotion to sharing it with their students," said Hunter A. Applewhite, president of the Dominion Foundation. "Virginia's colleges and universities are among the best in the nation, and this year's nominees personify what makes our institutions so great."
Hyde has won Old Dominion's faculty excellence award in the College of Sciences (2006) and the Provost's Award for Leadership in International Education (2014). He was recognized as outstanding undergraduate advisor in 2013 and designated University Professor in 2014.
