Darden College of Education to Offer Stand-Alone Sport Management Degree Program in 2017

By Megan Z. Shearin

The Darden College of Education at Old Dominion University will offer a new undergraduate degree in Sport Management in January.

Housed within the department of Human Movement Sciences, the 120-credit-hour program will provide a bachelor of science degree. It will be designed for students interested in acquiring the knowledge, skills and practical experience needed in careers related to the business of sports, including marketing and management of professional sports teams and leagues, intercollegiate athletics, sports facilities and events, health and fitness clubs, amateur sport organizations and other sport-related agencies.

"I want to acknowledge the hard work of all the faculty who diligently worked to make this degree program come to fruition," said Lynn Ridinger, chair of the Department of Human Movement Sciences. "This new stand-alone degree in Sport Management provides our students with a degree that truly reflects their area of study."

Human Movement Sciences, one of six academic departments within the Darden College of Education, offers undergraduate and graduate degrees to prepare professionals for fields dedicated to the promotion of health and human movement, including exercise science; health and physical education; park, recreation and tourism studies, and sport management.

"The faculty within the Human Movement Sciences Department continue to raise the bar for the Darden College of Education," said Jane S. Bray, the dean of the college. "We are very excited to add this degree program to Old Dominion University and appreciate the support from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in helping the University address the needs of our students."

The Darden College of Education provides a variety of undergraduate and nationally ranked graduate programs. The college prepares students to be education, industry and service professionals through its six departments: Communication Disorders & Special Education, Counseling & Human Services, Educational Foundations & Leadership, Human Movement Sciences, STEM Education & Professional Studies, and Teaching & Learning.
