Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs Sponsors Climate Change Lecture

Old Dominion University's Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs will play host to the lecture "Climate Change Injustice: Responsibility and Response" by G. Madison Powers of Georgetown University.

Powers' address will be Tuesday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in room 1005 of Constant Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Powers is a professor in the Department of Philosophy and a senior research scholar at Georgetown's Kennedy Institute of Ethics, which he directed from 2000 to 2009.

He is widely published in normative and practical philosophy, including issues of justice in public health and social policy. He recently co-wrote the book "Social Justice: The Moral Foundations of Public Health and Health Care Policy."

Powers' current research centers on global justice with a special focus on environmental challenges arising from the global system of production and distribution of food, energy and water.

Old Dominion's Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs, housed within the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, seeks to raise awareness and stimulate discussion of the ethical dimensions of matters of public concern within the Old Dominion campus community and the larger Hampton Roads community.

Its mission includes strengthening moral community and fostering a commitment to ethical ideals in public life; facilitating reflection on the ethical standards that govern the professions, and highlighting the unique and valuable contribution that philosophical reasoning can make to practical decision-making.
