Faculty Summer Institute on Teaching and Learning to Focus on Diversity

The Center for Learning and Teaching will hold its 18th annual Faculty Summer Institute on Teaching and Learning at Ted Constant Convocation Center on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 17 and 18.

This year's topic is "Faces of Diversity across our Global Campus." The keynote speaker will be Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, who has been named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME (2012) and one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News and World Report (2008). His TED Talk on underrepresented students in the sciences and in engineering is available at 4 pillars of college success in science.

Hrabowski was named by President Obama to chair The President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. He also chaired the National Academies' committee that produced the "Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America's Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads" report (2011).

A child-leader in the civil rights movement, Hrabowski was prominently featured in Spike Lee's 1997 documentary, "Four Little Girls," on the racially motivated bombing, in 1963, of Birmingham's Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

The Faculty Summer Institute on Teaching and Learning, which is co-sponsored by ODU's Center for Learning and Teaching and Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, comprises two days of reflection, sharing and learning, built around workshops and panel discussions.
