ODUOnline Associate VP Receives Board Appointment

By Heather Huling

Andy Casiello, associate vice president for Distance Learning at Old Dominion University, has been appointed to the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) Board of Directors. Casiello is one of seven directors at large on the board that consists of 21 members total. Casiello also serves on the annual conference committee.

UPCEA is the association for leaders in professional, continuing and online education. Membership includes most of the leading public and private colleges and universities in North America. Casiello is a natural fit, as he is responsible for ODU's Distance Learning programs. ODUOnline delivers more than 100 online degree and certificate programs serving 40 percent of ODU's student population. Old Dominion also serves distance students at remote site locations including community colleges, military bases and other locations worldwide.

Casiello is one of seven authors of UPCEA's Hallmarks of Excellence in Online Leadership. This work has been endorsed by ACE, ACRL, Merlot, Educause, NACUBO, NASPA and Quality Matters as well as several others. It was this work on the hallmarks that led to his increased involvement within the UPCEA leadership, and eventual election to the board.

"This position allows me to collaborate with the most prominent and successful leaders in online education, both nationally and internationally, and helps put ODU on an international stage to showcase our excellence in online education," Casiello said. "I'm grateful for their trust and support of my work in online education."

Casiello is a doctoral candidate, working towards a Ph.D. in higher education administration at Old Dominion University. He holds an associate's degree in telecommunications technology from Springfield Technical Community College, a bachelor's degree in communications from Fitchburg State College and a Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education's management development program.

Old Dominion University, located in the coastal city of Norfolk, is Virginia's entrepreneurial-minded doctoral research university and has been delivering distance learning programs for 30 years. We offer over 100 programs through ODUOnline in a variety of formats, allowing students to complete degree programs all over the world.
