ODU to Host Fifth Annual STEM Day for South Hampton Roads Elementary Students
February 14, 2017
Old Dominion's Student Virginia Education Association chapter, the Darden College of Education and MonarchTeach are hosting the University's fifth annual STEM Day on Feb 18.
About 150 fourth and fifth graders from Norfolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake will participate in hands-on activity sessions taught by ODU professors. The students will explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields at the new Darden College of Education building. In addition to classes, a campus tour will be provided. More than 45 student volunteers will assist the groups.
"This is a day to benefit both the fourth and fifth grade students and college students. The elementary students get to experience college life and the STEM field while the college students get a chance to practice teaching. We want to motivate elementary students to think about college and pursue STEM professions," said Riley Moran, the ODU SVEA vice president.
In past years, students have participated in activities like engineering and re-engineering robotic frogs to jump further, examining the power of ratios in football and investigating DNA strands.
Old Dominion's Student Virginia Education Association chapter is sponsoring the event.
