ODU's Radyushkin, Michaeli Receive SCHEV Faculty Honors

When he came to Old Dominion University as its top academic officer last summer, Provost Austin Agho knew about the reputation of ODU's world class faculty.
Last week in Richmond, Agho received confirmation.
Two ODU faculty members, Anatoly Radyushkin, eminent scholar and professor of physics, and Jennifer Michaeli, assistant professor of engineering technology, received Outstanding Faculty Awards from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).
"The tradition of excellence in scholarship, teaching and service at this University goes back decades," said Agho. "Congratulations to Dr. Radyushkin and Dr. Michaeli, our 30th and 31st SCHEV Outstanding Faculty honorees. They are joining distinguished company at Old Dominion."
Among Virginia universities, Old Dominion trails only the College of William & Mary in its total number of SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award winners. Radyushkin and Michaeli are two of 12 faculty members recognized statewide this year.
"It is gratifying to be recognized, particularly since ODU professors of physics have received this honor three years in a row," said Radyushkin, who has maintained a joint position between Old Dominion's Department of Physics and the Jefferson Lab since 1992.
Radyushkin is an internationally recognized theoretical physicist, focusing on nuclear and particle physics. He has written more than 120 publications in refereed journals, with total citations exceeding 11,000. The other two ODU physicists who received the award recently were Charles Hyde in 2016 and Gail Dodge in 2015.
Michaeli was recognized in the "rising star" category by SCHEV. She joined the faculty in 2012 and has developed new undergraduate and graduate courses in naval architecture and marine engineering, enthusiastically mentors engineering students and promotes advances in curriculum, lab infrastructure, and collaborative partnerships across academia, Navy and Industry.
"I'm honored to be recognized by SCHEV with this award, and proud to be a contributing member to the University's efforts to grow marine-centric research and higher education in the Hampton Roads region," said Michaeli.
Michaeli has 18 years' experience as a naval engineer in government and industry, working closely with military forces to identify operational gaps, explore operational and technical requirements for future needs, develop advanced technology systems to address challenging operational requirements and field new capabilities.
She has been PI or co-PI on more than $3 million in grants for naval engineering research from the Navy and shipbuilding industry.
Since 1987, the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Awards have honored faculty at Virginia's institutions of higher learning who exemplify the highest standards of teaching, research and service.
This year's recipients were honored during an awards ceremony Feb. 16 at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond. The winners represent public and private two- and four-year institutions.
"The faculty members we honor here today have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence. They have used their expertise to inspire both students and their communities," Gov. Terry McAuliffe said. "Supporting the wonderful educators who make up Virginia's world-class higher education system is a crucial component of building the new Virginia economy, and it is my privilege to recognize each of them with the Outstanding Faculty Award."
Each of the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award winners received an engraved award and $5,000, underwritten by the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources. Dominion is the parent company of Dominion Virginia Power.
